first aid burns

A burn is a very traumatic injury, cause by fire, chemicals, steam, electricity or any other form of heat transfer to the skin (our biggest organ). Burns on less then 10% of the body surface is considered minor. An entire hand is 1% of the body surface.

The symptoms of burns could be summed up in two parts. Minor and severe burns. Minor burns are painful and cause reddening and blistering of the skin while severe burns are painless causes white or charred area.

Home Remedies for Burns

Gently pour ice cold water immediately on the affected area or you might even try compresses of ice cubes. Do this for more than 5-7 minutes or until the pain stops. If any blister has formed, do not prick it.

The best first aid for burns is diluted vinegar. Vinegar is luckily available nearly in all households. Cover the injured area with a cloth, soaked in diluted vinegar of any kind. Vinegar acts painkilling and relaxing. If pains become stronger again, change the compress for a fresh one. Refresh the vinegar compress as often as needed.

To heal the wound that has developed due to burning, take honey and apply it all over the wound. But do it only after you’ve properly washed your wound.

Sprinkle the burned surface thickly with baking-soda, or make a saturated solution of the soda; wring cloths from it and apply, changing as they become dry. When the pain is relieved remove, and use an absorbent dressing if the burn is a very deep one.

Make a poultice of raw sauerkraut and apply it to the burned area. If you don’t have sauerkraut, use crushed comfrey root with a little honey. In fact, just plain honey on the burn may ease the pain and help the healing process.

Colgate toothpaste is a great ointment for burns. For skin burns apply ice cold vinegar right away for fast ease. Apply baking soda side of cool damp paper towel straight over burn area or wrap it with paper towel baking soda towards burn if burn is on finger.

Plantain leaves is a popular remedy for treating burns. These green weedy plants grow practically anywhere in the world with sufficient water. Just don’t confuse this plantain with the banana-like vegetable of the same name. Hit the leaf with a small hammer, enough to smash just a little bit the plant than wrap the affected area with the leaf.

It is a good idea to grow an Aloe vera plant in the sunny kitchen window. For a burn first aid, slice off a small piece of the fleshy leaf, open it, and apply the fresh sap directly on the skin burn. Aloe vera has astringent and tissue-healing properties works fabulous for skin burns.

Unlike third degree burns that require immediate medical attention, small everyday household burns are easy to handle. No matter how you burned yourself, the key to quick relief is quick relief. What you do in the first few minutes after being burned makes a whole lot of difference in how well your skin heals.

Milk is an excellent compress of minor burns. Simply soak the burned area in the milk for 15 minutes or so or apply a cloth soaked in milk to the affected area. The fat content in the milk soothes the burns and promotes healing.

After 24 hours or so, wash the burned area gently with soap and water daily. Keep the burn dry and clean and covered with bandage between washings.

Using too much of ice or extreme ice cold water can make the burn worse. Cool, not cold, water will stop the burning from spreading through your tissues and will act as a temporary painkiller.

Aloe Vera shortens the healing process. Two or three days after the burn, simply open a leaf and smear its liquid directly on the burn, the coolness of its “juice” brings welcome relief from the pain. Reapply four to six times daily, with or without a bandage covering.

Eat plenty of citrus fruits, potatoes and broccoli that are rich in vitamin C as it helps in healing process for burns and other wounds.

Like Vitamin C, vitamins A & E too speed up the healing process for burns. Green fruits and veggies, cereals and nuts are high in vitamins A & E respectively.

Apply vitamin E from capsule directly to the burn to experience faster healing and prevent scarring.

For quick recovery time and healthier skin after burns, consume foods rich in zinc.

Apply white Colgate toothpaste liberally over the wound. Keep it overnight. Next morning, there will hardly be any pain or burning sensation.

Cut potato slices and put it on the burns. The starch in the potato neutralizes the burn, pain and prevents scarring.

Honey applied over burns cools, removes pain and aids fast healing. A salve and antibiotic, bacteria’s cannot exist in honey. Cover the area with some gauze.

Lavender oil takes the sting out of the pain, speeds up the healing process and prevents scarring. First clean the burn with mild soap and water, combine lavender oil with almond or olive oil in the ratio of 1:3. Apply this mixture liberally over the burn at least 3 times a day leaving the wound uncovered.

Calendula, an antiseptic & anti-inflammatory, which is applied topically to speed healing and prevent infection.

Coat the burned skin with egg white as it helps keep the wound from drying out.

For minor burns, rub some mustard on the burned area. Despite stinging, it takes the pain away and reduces blisters and scarring.

first aid kit

lways good to have first aid available when someone needs it. You never know when you may run upon someone that has scraped some part of their body, or some other minor incident or accident.

There are some people that just seem to be accident prone and can’t help themselves. Then you have those that in spite of being careful, end up hurting themselves anyway. Having a small first aid cabinet can help those who need to take care of a minor injury. When you are getting a first aid kit together, you should consider what you think you will need for your family.

One thing you will probably need is band-aid strips. Both plastic and woven ones will do the trick. The difference is the plastic ones are thinner and the woven ones are slightly thicker. So, it .may depend on the cut as to which ones you should use.

Or if you have someone that has slightly injured or cut their fingertip or knuckle area, you may want to have some fingertip and knuckle woven band-aid strips. Since the injury will more than likely be minor, then these can be kept on the area for a few days.

Gauze pads can be used for larger wounds that occur on the arm, knee or leg areas. Depending on the size of the wound or injury will determine what size gauze pads to use. Of course, before you put on the pad, you will need to put some antibiotic on the affected area. The antibiotic will help the affected area to heal.

Sometimes, an unknown substance can get into the eye and cause it to burn. You will need eye wash to flush it out in addition to water. This may have to be done several times until the person feels that their eye is ok. Even after that, it is probably advisable that they see a physician to make sure everything is fine with their eye.

You definitely need to have a first aid book so that you can follow the instructions. There will be different things in the first aid kit that you may not know what to do with them. So this book will be able to help you use the right thing for the appropriate injury or minor illness.

Having a small first aid cabinet will come in handy for you and the family members that live with you. If they are old enough, they too, need to know what’s in the first aid cabinet and should know how to utilize it.

Your Kids And Bird Watching

bird first aid

Bird watching for children is one of the activities that can help instill the value and love for animals on their young minds. Aside from teaching them the importance of taking good care of animals, bird watching for children can also be a great of spending quality time with them. This activity is also great for children because it can teach them to become nature-wise and van teach them teach them good manners such as respect for animals.

What you need

Before you go bird watching with children, make sure that you yourself have had a first-hand experience on the activity. What you can do is search on the Internet what are the best places to bird watching with children. Once you found the best one or the nearest one in your area, take a time off to visit it before bring your children there.

Check if the entire area is safe for children. If you are having doubts about children safety, it is best to talk to the administrator of the park or the preserve to make sure that they have enough facilities to take care of kids. Also, ask what are the things that you need to bring when going there.

Also check how much are the fees, how many kids are allowed to bird watch, and what are the ideal ages for bird watching. When everything is done and you are confident that your child will be safe while bird watching, book a tour date while you’re there.

On the date of the bird watching activity, make sure that you bring the following:

1. A good pair of binoculars for kids. This is very important because the center might not have enough binoculars for the visitors. To ensure that the kids can use something, grab a good yet cheap pair of binoculars when you are in the department store.

2. A bird book or field guide. Although most of the bird parks offer booklet that contain information on the birds that can be seen there, it is best to bring a book guide on your own just in case they don’t have one. The book guide can help your kids identify the common birds in the area and can help them in describing the birds based on their appearance, color, size, and shape.

3. Bottled water and snacks. Since kids tend to get hungry often, it is best if you bring lots of bottled water and handy snack packs just in case no convenient store is near the area.

4. First aid kit. This should always be a must whenever you go out with your kids because they can be so accident-prone. Make sure that you include a first aid kit in your child’s backpack to make sure that you can tend to the wound or scratch immediately.

5. A camera. This is also a “must” when going out with kids because it can preserve the memories with your kids. Having a handy camera can enable you take as many pictures of your kids during the tour. You can also ask your kids to take as many photos as they can of the birds that they see.

6. A notebook or sketchpad with pens or pencils. One of the benefits of bird watching for children is that it encourages them to jot down their observations. These can also be helpful to artistically-inclined children because it can encourage them to draw the birds that they see.

Vanity Mirror and Medicine Cabinets

The vanity area is very important in a bathroom. think how often you use some element of the vanity area.

Choosing an attractive vanity mirror, or mirrored medicine chest is not only essential to the efficient usage of your bathroom, it is also a design element and will add much to your finished bathroom if chosen carefully.

You first need to determine whether you want a flat mirror above your vanity, or you want a mirrored medicine chest. This is a personal choice based on your own needs. Some people seem to glide through life needing few things to make them comfortable. These folks will do well with a flat mirror.

For the rest of us, who need lots of things, a mirrored medicine chest will serve our needs much better. Most of us need headache and cold remedies, band-aids, lotions and cremes etc. to help us prepare and get through our day, and we like them conveniently placed and arranged.

Fortunately, mirrored medicine chests come in many attractive styles these days. They are no longer that ugly little box hanging over the vanity.

Think of the rest of the decor you either have, or will install in your bathroom when selecting either a mirror or a mirrored medicine cabinet. Some come with frames that match the cabinetry in our bathrooms, and others are frameless.

Look carefully at the inside and how the storage is arranged. This is usually pretty basic, but you want to be sure shelves can be moved to accomodate the head room needed for certain items. Also check the quality. Is this an item that will hold up, be easy to clean and support your needs.

Make sure this accessory to your bathroom has a minimum of grooves and places that are difficult to get at and clean. You will probably be living with your new medicine cabinet for a long time.

Once you know the styling you are looking for, make it a point to check the front area of the large home improvement centers when you are shopping. Sometimes, if the timing is just right, you can pick up a very nice mirrored medicine cabinet for a very reasonable price. Periodically, manufacturers will discontinue an item, and those left in stock may be offered at very attractive pricing. It is good at such times to have some notes about the dimensions you need, so if a good deal presents itself, you can snap it up.

One other thing to keep in mind, is lighting. You should have lighting on both sides of your vanity mirror, and you will want your lighting fixtures to complement the style of your vanity and mirror.

How to Treat Burns

Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

first aid burns

Burns are essentially damage to the skin and tissues, but it is the degree that makes the determination on how it will heal. It is important to know how to treat burns to avoid permanent skin damage or your health.

The way burns are treated and the time it takes to get the first treatment is a factor in skin recovery. When a burn occurs, the major thing to do is to cool the area and remove any bacterial that can cause an infection. Three degrees of burns exist. They are first, second, and third with the third being the worst and deepest burn of all.

It Really Hurts

Burns are very painful at any level and are a normal part of life. Many years ago, the normal procedure was to apply some oil based product such as butter but that was found to make it worse and to damage the area more. The first and best action for a burn is to run cool water over the area to remove the heat and reduce the pain of the area.

First And Second Degree Burn Treatment

First degree burns are comparable to what you would experience with normal sunburn. The top layer of skin is the part that is affected by this degree. For a first degree burn, simply run cool water over the area and take a painkiller like acetametaphin for the pain. A sunburn relief can be applied to help also.

Second degree burns are more damaging and carry more pain with them. This type of burn is usual of a hot water burn and has blistering. It could also be severe sunburn that causes the skin to peel.

If the burn is on the face and hands, it is essential to see a physician and not treat it yourself. If the second degree burn is large enough, it can cause the individual to become dehydrated. Again, painkillers and lots of water are recommended.

Third Degree Burn Treatment

Third degree burns are never treated at home and require a doctor’s care. The skin is not only damaged on the top but through each layer to the tissue below. The pain factor is at zero with a third degree burn because the nerves have been destroyed as a result.

If the third degree burn is in a large enough area of the body, it may require a hospital stay where constant fluids are given and the wound is cleaned and scrubbed regularly. Third degree burns over a major portion of the body can result in death so it is detrimental these patients get to the hospital as soon as possible.

For most burns, either from fire, chemical burns, coming in contact with a hot item, or from sunburn, treatment with skin care formulated to begin the skin healing process is important to alleviate pain and to improve chances of healthy dermal layer growth.

Knowing how to treat burns gives you the first aid for burns that can literally help to save someone’s skin.

Most Common Obstacles in Breeding Horses

One of the most common and a fatal problem any trainer would face is the training area space; it should be wide enough for catching your horse and not to lose control upon it. If it happens and it is a small area then no option and it may become a must to bond the horse!

There are several techniques for bonding which will be discussed later.

Second annoying problem you would face when breeding a horse is the bucking while you are trying to mount it, this is an obstacle that you should overcome and know how to deal with, you would wonder why the horse is behaving that way, well it maybe some other previous user whom mistreated the horse, so it’s most probably a matter of abuse.

Now the problem is how to overcome, well you should learn how to mount the horse while not frustrating by using any of the mounting techniques, I will mention them later and give a source where to find them, as well as using the help of another person for the mounting purpose but these solutions are under the assumption of no past abuse.

One other common problem is the horse getting used to eating it trail grass, and this problem rises due to a default from the trainer side, as if you kept on preventing this action immediately when it occurs, the horse wont get used to it and will know that this is not a permissible behavior, you will avoid lots of headache if you trained it on this attitude from the beginning.

By following my signature, you can find some reviews for resources of the bonding and mounting techniques, those I have promised to provide you with through my article, hopefully you will find them really beneficial and help you through all your horse breeding issues.

How to Clean Dog or Cat Urine Without Harmful Chemicals

How to Clean Dog or Cat Urine Without Harmful Chemicals

One of the worst things a pet owner is faced with is not “number two” but “number one.”  Number two may smell until it’s cleaned, but usually it doesn’t leave lasting odors or stains unless it’s in liquid form.  Even then, it’s easier to deal with in the long term.

We will talk a lot about cats in this article because they have to urinate inside if you’re using litter boxes and not letting them out to do their business.  Dogs, if they’re trained the way they’re supposed to be, should be going outside.  This method works on any urine, however, including human.

Urine, as with any large volume liquid stain on carpeting, will wick through the carpeting into the pad and onto the subflooring.  It isn’t that most cleaners don’t do the job; it’s just that if they don’t get all the way to every bit of the urine then it can’t work.  This is why some stains appear to be “ghosts” and reappear later—especially when the area is rewetted.  The stain (red wine, chocolate ice cream, whatever) is still in the nap of the carpeting and the padding and only the surface of the carpet is clean.  It can wick back up onto the surface and stubbornly reappear.  The urine cleaning spray recipe outlined later in this article can be used to clean most stains from any colorfast carpeting.

The other issue with urine is that we may clean it sufficiently to make it comfortable for our own noses but dogs and cats have noses that are thousands of times more sensitive than ours.  Pets will tend to remark the same spot over and over eventually leading to ruined flooring and complete replacement of carpeting.  It can also mean replacement of subflooring at considerable expense.  It’s best to act as soon as possible and to keep the stable solution we describe below on hand.

There is good news!  With dollar store ingredients and not a lot of work, most colorfast carpeting can be cleaned and deodorized so that Fido or Fluffy ignore the area.  We will also give you a link to a homemade cleaning product that will actually deter an animal from remarking the area.  We don’t give the ingredients here, but their formula is only $8.95 (at the time this article was written) and is a recipe that you can make over and over again with household ingredients.  We have used this formula in our own home and it is fantastic!  None of the enzyme cleaners available commercially (and for a price) kept the pets from revisiting the area like this formula did.

If you have an animal (especially a cat) that continues to urinate around the house, we cannot emphasize enough how important it is to take the animal to your veterinarian to determine if he/she has a urinary tract infection (UTI).  A cat especially will have pain upon urination with a UTI and will associate this pain with the litter box.  He/she will avoid the litter box and urinate anywhere else.  We had a cat that continued to pee around the house for several months and we finally had to cage her just before we considered re-homing her.  We were at our wits end until a friend at our local no-kill animal shelter told us to have her checked for a UTI.  She had a severe infection.  After a week of antibiotics, she returned to the litter box with a little coaxing and has been a great cat since then.

Also, spay or neuter your animal.  Male cats will spray foul-smelling urine on walls, furniture and other vertical surfaces to mark territory.  Neutering, especially before maturity, can often stop this.  Male dogs will hike a leg onto almost anything to mark their territories and neutering a dog will often stop this behavior.

This is off topic of this article, but here is another money saving hint:  If your cat does not have a UTI or has been successfully treated for one and still does not consistently use the litter box, don’t buy the pricey cat litters that advertise that they contain “cat attracting herbs.”  Get an unscented clumping cat litter with a fine grain texture close to sand (where a cat would prefer to dig).  The brand doesn’t matter, but make sure it has a fine grain and no scent.  The scent is for humans, not for cats.  A scented litter to some cats may be as overwhelming to them as the perfume counter at the local department store is to us.  Place 6-8 heaping tablespoonfuls of catnip into your hands and rub the herb over the litter.  Stir the cat litter in with the litter scoop.  This makes the litter box more interesting and your cat will eventually return to it without the catnip.  If you have multiple cats, make sure there are litter boxes for each cat and make sure you scoop it daily.  Some cats are very finicky, but can you blame them?  Would you use a dirty toilet?

We saved thousands of dollars by using the steps below.  We must, however, emphasize that you must test for colorfastness (making sure the dyes in the carpeting do not fade, run or bleach out) by using an inconspicuous corner or the inside of a closet or by using a remnant left when the carpet was installed.

We are making no guarantees or warranties with this information.  It has been gleaned from multiple sources on the Internet and from trial and error with our own experiences.  Please do not send an email to us telling us that it didn’t work.  It will if you follow the instructions, but since we can’t be there with you to ensure you’re doing it correctly we cannot make any guarantees.  This information is distributed without cost and without guarantee.

Get a gallon of distilled white vinegar that’s at least 5% acidity (some cheaper brands are diluted to 4% acidity and will work, but you would have to dilute with less water).  Also obtain a bucket or second empty gallon container.  Pour ½ gallon of the vinegar into the bucket or other container and add ½ gallon of water.  We keep this labeled in an empty vinegar bottle so that we’re ready to attack if there’s a repeat of four-legged indiscretion on the carpeting.

If the spot is still wet, blot up as much urine as possible with paper towels or old cloth towels.  Dispose of the paper towels (get them out of the house) and either wash the towels you used or get them to an area where the cats don’t go.  We have a hamper in our laundry room (the only cat free zone in our house) where we keep these until we can launder them.  If they’re on the floor or where a cat can get to them, they will urinate on these.  When you launder the towels, add one cup of white or apple cider vinegar to the wash to neutralize the odor (We don’t use apple cider vinegar in the carpet cleaning recipes because of the color.  It can tend to discolor carpeting and other fabrics whereas white vinegar does not).

Saturate the area with the vinegar and water solution.  Urine will wick out under the carpeting to an area 4-6 times the size of the spot you see on top of the carpet.  So, if you have a four-inch circular spot on the carpeting, you need to wet the area for at least 24 inches around.  It is better to saturate a larger area to ensure it reaches all of the urine than to be stingy with it and have to repeat the process.  A gallon of white vinegar costs less than $2.00 so it’s not wise to try to be frugal here.  If the spot is near the wall or on the wall and has run onto the carpeting, clean the wall with the vinegar water solution and make sure you pour some of the vinegar solution on the baseboard so that it wicks behind that area also.  If the vinegar and other solutions we discuss cannot reach all sources of the urine, it will not work.

Allow the vinegar water solution to remain in place for at least one hour.  Use a wet vacuum or carpet cleaning machine to extract the excess vinegar and water.  If you do not have any of this equipment, place 4 or 5 old towels on top of the area and place a heavy weight on top (a sealed gallon or two of water will work).  Replace the towels as they become damp and repeat this until the towels are no longer wicking up large amounts of moisture.  This can take several days.

If the urine is dried, add 1 teaspoonful of liquid laundry detergent to the gallon of vinegar and water.  Shake gently to dissolve the detergent.  You don’t want to create bubbles in your solution.  Use a cup of this solution to gently scrub the carpeting with an old toothbrush or a plastic scrub brush until the stain is removed.  If the stain does not come up (it will depend on the carpeting), saturate the area with the vinegar/water/detergent solution and continue as above with a wet stain.  We will give you a stain removal formula that will remove even old urine stains later in this article.

After the carpet is as dry as possible with extraction or the towel method, remove everything from the area and allow it to air dry.  Use a fan on its highest setting to aid in the drying.  This can take up to a week.  If you have dense carpeting or thick padding or both, you may have to pull the carpeting loose to get it to dry.  If it stays damp longer than a week, you risk mildew forming under the carpeting.

If a urine odor remains after the vinegar water solution above, follow the next steps.

After the carpeting is dry or only slightly damp, sprinkle regular baking soda liberally over the entire area.  Use one regular sized box of baking soda for an area of 24-32 inches around.

Prepare 2-3 cups of the vinegar water solution, but add 1 teaspoonful of liquid laundry detergent or liquid dishwashing detergent.  Pour this over the baking soda.  The baking soda will begin to foam and release carbon dioxide (apologies to those who have an earlier copy of this article where we incorrectly stated that oxygen was released).  Work this into the carpeting with your fingers or a brush, pushing the solution around and into the carpeting.  When all the foam has been worked into the carpeting, allow it to air dry.  The baking soda residue can be vacuumed after the carpeting has dried.

Keep in mind that if you’re smelling urine, the vinegar solution did not reach all the way into the padding and the subflooring.  You can repeat the vinegar water treatment again, but use more solution and saturate a larger area.  Make sure the carpeting and padding dries thoroughly between treatments.  If the carpet or padding stays damp, you can end up with mold or mildew under the carpeting.

If you do an Internet search for these types of cleaning methods, many will state to sprinkle baking soda on the carpeting and then pour hydrogen peroxide over it.  Peroxide and baking soda together do not react except to form wet baking soda.  The peroxide by itself will eventually release oxygen when it comes in contact with dirt or urine, but not because of the baking soda.  We’ve tried this and have had much better results with the baking soda and vinegar combination or by the use of peroxide with an oxygen-based powder cleaner which releases much more oxygen much more rapidly.

Urine Stain Removal

The following steps use hydrogen peroxide which has a mild bleaching effect.  Do not use it on any surface without testing for colorfastness.  Always use latex gloves when working with peroxide.

Stains can be removed from the carpeting just as inexpensively.  Again, though, you must test for colorfastness 24 hours in advance.  Use ¼ cup of the hydrogen peroxide on a small and inconspicuous area of the carpeting or use a remnant.  Pour onto a small area and allow it to remain for 24 hours.  If there has been no color fading or bleaching, proceed with cleaning.  Do not spill the following solution on any surface or use it on any surface that has not been tested for colorfastness—including clothing.

Put on rubber gloves before mixing this solution.  The peroxide can bleach your hands and the alcohol can cause severe drying of the skin.  Keep this solution away from children and do not apply it to pets.  Do not get this in your eyes.

Get one 16-ounce bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide (the kind in the brown bottle in the first aid section of the drug store, grocery store or dollar store.  Do not use the stronger solutions used for mixing with hair coloring) and pour it into a 32-ounce spray bottle.  Fill the spray bottle ¾ of the way with warm tap water.  To this add ½ scoop of oxygen based powder cleaner (“Oxi”  “Oxy Power”  “Awesome Oxygen” and other brands are available everywhere) and two tablespoons of 70% rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol).  Do not shake, but gently rotate the bottle to dissolve the powder.  Move quickly to your urine spot as the oxygen cleaning powder and the peroxide will begin to foam and will eventually blow out of the bottle.  Because of this, keep the ingredients on hand but do not mix it ahead of time.  It is only good for about 3-4 hours once mixed.

Spray liberally over the urine spot and scrub gently with a brush or rough cloth (a piece of old terry cloth towel works well).  Most of the stain will not come up right away.  Spray the area liberally again and walk away.  Wait until it dries.  The oxygen powder and the peroxide will slowly bleach the stain out.  Repeat in a couple of hours if necessary.

Dispose of any excess peroxide solution as it will not keep and may cause your plastic spray bottle to blow apart.

A good deodorizer and deterrent can be made with kitchen ingredients.  It is sold under the name of Pee Away and is a recipe.  Once you’ve bought the recipe (less than $9.00 at the time of the writing of this article) you can make the solution over and over again.  We have even used it on furniture to keep the cats from getting on the furniture.  It works well and lasts for 3-4 weeks before it has to be reapplied.  Go to our website at http://www.castlehillsoaps.com and click on the Pee Away link in the menu.  It will take you to the Pee Away website where you will find more information and ordering instructions.  We highly recommend this recipe!  A 32-oz bottle of this can be made for just a couple of dollars and once mixed it can be kept in a spray container and used as needed.

Severity of Burns

first aid burns

Extensive burns or burns causing more than minor discomfort should be treated by a healthcare professional. For superficial burns caused by temperature (picking up a hot object, for example), natural medicine may be helpful after the burn is cleaned with soap and cold water and gently dried.

A burn is damage to your body’s tissues caused by heat, chemicals, electricity, sunlight or radiation. Scalds from hot liquids and steam, building fires and flammable liquids and gases are the most common causes of burns.

Types of Burns

To distinguish a minor burn from a serious burn, the first step is to determine the degree and the extent of damage to body tissues. The three classifications of first-degree burn, second-degree burn and third-degree burn will help you determine emergency care.

First Aid for Burns

Minor burns usually heal without further treatment. They may heal with pigment changes, meaning the healed area may be a different color from the surrounding skin. Watch for signs of infection, such as increased pain, redness, fever, swelling or oozing. If infection develops, seek medical help. Avoid re-injuring or tanning if the burns are less than a year old — doing so may cause more extensive pigmentation changes. Use sunscreen on the area for at least a year.

First remove any constricting jewelry, such as rings.

Do NOT use butter or oils on a burn.

The effected area should be dowsed with cool water as soon as possible. It can be cleansed gently with chlorhexidine solution. Do NOT apply ice or cool to near-freezing temperatures (this can cause additional tissue injury).

A tetanus booster should be obtained if not administered within the previous 5 years.

Treatment of Burns

The treatment depends on what kind of burn you have. If a first- or second-degree burn covers an area larger than 2 to 3 inches in diameter, or is on your face, hands, feet or genitals, you should see a doctor right away. Third-degree burns require emergency medical attention. Do not put butter, oil, ice or ice water on burns. This can cause more damage to the skin.

Prevention of Burns – Steps you can take

Keep matches, lighters, chemicals, and lit candles out of your child’s reach.

Put child-safety covers on all electrical outlets.

Get rid of equipment and appliances with old or frayed cords and extension cords that look damaged.

If you need to use a humidifier or vaporizer, use a cool-mist model rather than a hot-steam one.

Choose sleepwear that’s labeled flame retardant (either polyester or treated cotton). Cotton sweatshirts or pants that aren’t labeled as sleepwear generally aren’t flame retardant.

Make sure older children are especially careful when using irons or curling irons.

Prevent house fires by making sure you have a smoke alarm on every level of your home and in each bedroom. Check these monthly and change the batteries twice a year.

Don’t smoke inside, especially when you are tired, taking medications that can make you drowsy, or in bed.

Don’t use fireworks or sparklers.

Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove every time you cook.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation

If you have no first hand know-how with CPR, study it. Address your local infirmary, EMS, or local fire department to discover when, how and where you may attend a residential district CPR course.
